Pirelli 2025 calendar new complete with cardboard box

Recalling the previous iconic editions of the Pirelli Calendar, photographer Ethan James Green has chosen for edition n° 51 of The Cal™ an approach that plays with nudity and explores the meaning that can be attributed to beauty today. Green, based in New York, has built his reputation in the world of fashion photography and portraiture for his ability to capture the essence and personal beauty of his subjects through his shots. He has shot on the beach - a place strongly present in the history of the Calendar - and in the studio. The cast is international and includes different ages and “variety, in all its forms,” according to Green. “We called it Refresh and Reveal,” says the thirty-four-year-old photographer when describing the concept. “We talk about refresh because we go back to the origins of the Calendar, updating it. Reveal because we return to the concept of nudity, understood as a way to capture the real essence of someone.”

An energetic cast

Actress and model Hunter Schafer, TV presenter and actress Padma Lakshmi, British actress Jodie Turner-Smith and actors Vincent Cassel and John Boyega are part of the diverse cast who took part in the latest edition of the Calendar. “They are people who I consider truly beautiful” says Green regarding the protagonists of the shots, taken at the Miami Historic Virginia Key Beach Park in two shootings between May and June.

Also included among them are the Italian interpreter, performer and actress Elodie, the British actress and Bridgerton star Simone Ashley, the South Korean actress and Squid Game star Hoyeon, and the American model Jenny Shimizu. Within the cast there are two long-time collaborators of Ethan James Green, the Guatemalan-American artist Martine Gutierrez (who exhibited her works in a group exhibition together with Green himself) and the American model and illustrator Connie Fleming. Both are included in Green's second book, Bombshell (2024, Baron), a study dedicated to femininity, glamor and sensuality. “Cast selection has always played an important role in my work,” says Green. “Having the opportunity to work with a variety of people from the beginning was key. I've never wanted to shoot any other way.” For the third time in the history of the Pirelli Calendar, the 2025 edition hosts the photographer among the cast. Previously, Prince Gyasi (2024) and Bryan Adams (2022) took self-portraits that were included in their Calendars. But this year, for the first time, the self-portraits portraying the photographer are nudes. “I'm inside the Calendar because the only person I could have asked to show myself completely naked is me.”

Timeless portraits

Each model is present through a pair of portraits. One, in color, made outdoors, on the beach or in the water. The other, in black and white, was shot in the studio. In devising the concept of the 2025 Calendar, Green was inspired, in particular, by previous editions from the 1990s, created by photographers Richard Avedon and Herb Ritts. “They captured the person through their shots and created beautiful, timeless images,” comments Green. “This encapsulates what I wanted to achieve through my Calendar: to create something that people will be able to look back on in 20 or 30 years without it being dated, and that can perhaps be a reference in the future.” “The world has changed since the last time Pirelli created a Sexy Calendar. I was excited to explore how the way we see beauty and who is considered beautiful has changed today and to do so in the context of the most classic setting of the Pirelli Calendar – in the studio and on the beach.”

Dream team

Green has built a team of friends and collaborators with whom to work on the Calendar, the ideal team with which to realize this year's concept, classic yet essential, minimalist. Stylist Tonne Goodman has worked with Green several times in the past, including her first Vogue cover, shot in 2019, starring Rihanna. “I learned a lot from her and she is one of the best professionals at putting people at ease,” says Green. Hair stylist Lucas Wilson collaborated closely on Green's book, Bombshell. “I like the way Lucas takes care of his hair. He welcomes them. Respect their natural inclination.” continues Green “It's not perfect hair. But it's gorgeous hair.” Regarding the work of make-up artist Fulvia Farolfi, Green states: “she is a legend. He has been working in this industry for a long time. He knows how to put people really at ease. And there's no one else in her industry who can do full-body, tan-enhancing makeup better than her.”

Set designer Dylan Bailey's "extraordinary taste" and experience were key to the outcome of the shoot, Green continues. “He's a creative consultant, of sorts. Your opinion matters a lot." Marcs Goldberg, who has posed for Green in the past and worked on the set design of some previous projects, also took part in the Calendar project. “She understands how I work and knows what it means to be the subject of a shot. He helped me build the concept, when we arrived in Miami we walked together on the beaches looking for natural elements to integrate into the set, playing with the idea of nudity – for example palm leaves, wood or seaweed. She was also my stunt double [she supported me in creating the reference for the shot before the talent arrived on set.”

“A seal of approval”

Working on themes such as contemporary identity, sexuality, fashion, Green has become known for a body of extraordinarily intimate works, capable of capturing and highlighting the authentic beauty of his subjects. His work is included in publications such as Dazed, L'Uomo Vogue, Time, Vogue, W Magazine and WSJ Magazine. He has also collaborated with various luxury fashion houses. The first book he published, Young New York (2019, Aperture), is a collection of portraits taken of friends and collaborators in the parks of central New York, which chronicles queer identity over the past decade. In 2022 he founded the New York Life Gallery located in Chinatown, which offers an exhibition space for emerging and little-known artists, unknown archives and works from the 1900s. Through The Cal™ Project, the Michigan-born, New York-based photographer joins the list of illustrious artists who have signed previous editions, including Norman Parkinson, Terence Donovan, Helmut Newton, Bruce Weber, Annie Leibovitz, Paolo Roversi and Steven Meisel. “To be included among this group of legendary photographers who shot the Calendar – some of whom were my source of inspiration in choosing to become a photographer – is something extraordinary, a stamp of approval and an important moment in my career (Source: Pirelli.com)
