Selene chair by Artemide Milano design Vico Magistretti
SOLD OUT
A historic example of the "Womb" chair, designed by Eero Saarinen in 1948 for Florence Knoll. The project stemmed from the entrepreneur's request to create a chair that was "like a basket full of cushions," a refuge where one could curl up freely: a womb, in fact.
This specific piece dates back to the 1960s and represents a testament to the material innovation of the period: the shell is made of molded fiberglass, a cutting-edge material at the time, borrowed from the nautical industry, which allowed for the first time to create such organic and enveloping forms.
The chair stands out for its ergonomic shell design, designed to support multiple relaxation positions, supported by a simple steel rod frame. There are no visible markings or labels, a common feature in period production.
While maintaining its structural integrity, the armchair is presented with its natural patina shaped by time and use: there are stains, wear to the fabric, and some cigarette burns.
The covering, in its original pink colour, should perhaps be redone: however, it is fully usable
The Womb Chair can be picked up in person or delivered anywhere with carefully packaged and insured shipping. In serviced areas, you can choose to have it delivered directly by us. Viewing and purchasing in person at our warehouses is available by appointment.
